Comments I did not know of the man named Rick Griffin, but I sure do know his artwork and I am glad I do. From another artist his work does stands along by itself, his artwork has had a great influence on the art I do today. I have met other artist's that knew him and what they say about him is overwhelming and he was a artist to reckon with. Long live Rick Griffin where ever he is now.

Comments I was born in 1970 and played in my fathers jug band, the Jook Savages, my whole life. My father is Dave Morton, artist and musician in the Jook Savages, the band who met Rick in LA and garnered Ricks first San Francisco music poster. I always thought that the posters around the house were just more wacky hippy family history, not the early work of such a famed artist. I have always enjoyed his black and white "Indian surrounded by peyote buttons" that hangs in our music room.

Comments Well, I made it to the Laguna show. Met many great people. I attended the last three days, and spent the entire day there on Sunday. Like Dennis Watts, I felt I was looking at a road map of my life while viewing many of the pieces on display. The trip cost me $2,000 +, and was worth every penny. For me, the highlight was standing in front of "Curse of the Chumash". I was moved, to say the least.

Comments User-friendly site. Thank you. I saw the Laguna Museum's exhibit of some of Rick's work. It was much like looking at my own biography. The whole surfer--hippie--born again trilogy. I loved Rick's work (and still do!), some things that where a part of my life I hadn't even realized he had painted, until I saw them at Laguna. Peace Rick.

Comments Hi all, just stopped by to read the guestbook. I'm one of the folks who contributed images to this site. I am glad to be able to share these with other people. I was first exposed to Rick's work through his early days at Surfer Mag.I still have every single issue from that time in my life, along with a ton of other stuff by RG. Somehow, I'm going to find a way to make it out West for the show in Laguna. Though I never really met Rick, I feel as though i know him, in some way. For those who have asked about getting a copy of the film Pacific Vibrations, it is often listed on Ebay, in tape and DVD form. Check often.

Comments I was talking to a friend at work about cartoonists. I thought of Rick Griffin and googled him. This amazing website popped up. I was pleasantly surprised to see my favorite album cover included: Jackson Browne's "Late for the Sky" which, apparently, Rick did the lettering for. My favorite work of Rick's is from "The Gospel of John" comic. When I lived in the Philippines, "Praise, Inc." reprinted thousands of these for Calvary Chapel of Manila, or the Robert Case Band. There's an amazing image that begins chapter 5, where the lame man is healed, and walks away a whole man. The lame man in Rick's image is a young Bob Dylan. It is so cool.

Comments Cheers to Rick's family, from another Griffin in Australia! Excellent website and fascinating reading. I can't believe I've only just learnt about such a great artist, 15yrs after his passing (I'm ashamed to call myself an art lover!). Yet most of his work is very familiar, I know I've admired his art before. Rick was about 15 years my senior, but his taste and stlye is timeless and of a quality that will ensure his immortality without a doubt! Good to see someone doing the name proud! All the Very Best! Sincerely, Brad.

Comments When I worked at Calvary Chapel as a youth pastor Rick painted a mural on an old bus that we used to go around to High School campuses and do Bible Studies during lunch. Has anyone ever seen a photo of it. I would love a copy. Like many on this site I loved Ricks art as a psychadlic artist and then was so stoked when he started doing the Murph the Surf cartoons for surfer mag. It was so cool that he put his faith before his fame. His Gospel of John art is absolutely stunning thanks again for this site it was fun to look over the every page. He wasn't perfect but he was a really cool guy.

I've been a fan of Rick Griffin and the other great San Francisco based poster and comic artists of the era since I became familiar with their work through Greatful Dead album covers, vintage concert poster art, as well as the various work of R. Comments Rick was a major influence in my life in triple form as an artist, a surfer and a Christian...even though he didn't know it (maybe does now). I grew up in Oregon AND LOVED READING THE ADVENTURES OF MURPHY THE SURFY, about the time Endless Summer the movie came out, MURPHY was going on adventures to Australia also, so I decided that's where I was going to go. But I got drafted (flunked my physical) in 1969 got married and immigrated to Australia. I was airbrushing surf boards for a living... when I read an interview in wave magazine on Rick it was so cool to see the artist from back home, who's work I loved. When I started reading the interview... it like turned into a prayer by the time I was done reading it, I was bawling my head off. He had touched my life in such a profound way, in that exact space in time, exactly what I need to hear in Australia, when I look back, that prayer changed my life and became TRUE in my life. Some fifteen years later I was going to school at Art Center in LA. I looked Ricks phone number up and was going to call him and just say THANKS...but chickened out. A few years later I found out he had died... I felt SO BAD... I just wanted to tell him what a profound influence he was, first SPIRITUALY then artistically, I still find myself looking at his work for INSIRATION...THANKS RICK... I KNOW I WILL SEE YOU ONE DAY AND WILL TELL YOU MYSELF WITH COURAGE. GOD BLESS YOU RICK Jerry D. Werner

Comments Thank you for the site and a chance to see how his work continues to touch me and other people after so much time. As high schooler in San Francisco in the mid 70's Mr. Griffin's art propeled me and others to be better artist with wonderful lines those graceful, sweet ink lines and his orginal use of typography, wow! My father riped up my "Bullseye" poster and others I got from the Fillmore West back when (he thought I was on the wrong track) but I still have them and the great memories. And yes I forgave him for that. God bless Rick Griffin.

Comments I saw the R.G. episode of Longboard TV and was flooded with memories of my own youth. My friends and I were 'Lakesurfers' on southern Lake Michigan in the late '60s, which made Surfer Magazine a daily part of our existance. Of course, as the youngest, I was the gremmie of the group, and felt something of an affinity with Murphy. Later, as a sailor stationed in SD/LB, I purchased a 6'2" G&S twin-fin, and mostly carried it around in my car. I went on during that time, to 'identify' with the drug scene, and then, like Rick, became a 'born-again' Christian, regularly attending Saturday night concerts at Calvary Chapel, first in the tent, and then for a short while, in the auditorium. All the while, I was totally unaware that the art I'd favored through those years was produced by the great Rick, who may even have been sitting near me as we listened to Love Song, and The Road Home, and The Way, and .... Real, lasting PEACE to ya, Rick!

Comments Excellent site. I was glad to run across it recently via some near-random google search. I remember first seeing Rick Griffin's work when I visited a friend in California in 1969. I'd never seen underground comics, and this guy had a huge pile of them. For about two days, all I did was smoke hash and turn the pages, stunned, utterly amazed. Griffin's work captured something I hadn't thought could be communicated about the experience of being totally ripped on good acid. It was an epiphany for me. I'm a long way from those days -- aren't we all -- but I am no less amazed and delighted by the guy's art. I was sad to learn he'd died. At one of my sites, I recently put up a screen grab of one of his frames from The Complete Crumb Comics Vol. 17 with a link to the book on Amazon (by way of attribution). It's at the very bottom right of http://mysticbourgeoisie.blogspot.com/ -- grab a copy if you like. I think it speaks volumes about Griffin's amazing intelligence and humor. Again, thanks for creating this wonderful site.

Comments I grew up in SoCal and started surfing at Palos Verdes cove and Torrance beach about 1960. (San Pedro High School class of '65) I still have a few old Surfer Magazines with Rick's Murphy cartoons. I was graduate assistant in the Art Galleries at Cal State Long Beach when we did a show on Rick's work. Don't remember the exact year, must have been '69 or '70? You have the mailer for the show down toward the bottom in Miscellaneous: it's in a very uncharacteristic style (a griffin and Olde English font) and I don't remember if Rick himself did it or we did it in-house. Rick did paint a full-sized wall mural on one of the gallery walls that was a backdrop for the show. Took him several days to paint it. He insisted that it be painted over when the show ended and actually came out to the Art Galleries to make sure we did. I also was a fan of Rick's concert art for years in my travels during the late '60s and early '70s back and forth between the Bay Area and Berkeley, and SoCal. Wonderful memories of an absolutely fantastic artist! Rick is missed. A wonderful site with fantastic coverage of Rick's work!

Comments My picture is a pen on sketch board of Murf looking at a surf break with a crane operator. The title might have been How do we get down? It's black and white and is the pure essence of Griffin. Is this art worth anything other that the memories of him giving it to me when I was a gremmie? Are their Rick Griffin Auctions yearly?? I need to share this with the public after all these years of having it to myself. A gift is just that but when you share that gift it becomes a ledged.

Comments There are times and places we never forget. I was a green 1985 high school grad.bent on following the Grateful Dead until I had to start university in Jan. 1986. On 1985 fall Grateful Dead tour. the boy`s were tuning up for the scond set 11/08/85 Rochester War Memorial, NY. Jerry started belting the Beatles "Revolution " and Ricks "Twenty Years So Far " was unfurled as a huge stage back drop. Amazing. I also had the pleasure of meeting Rick at a signing at the Psychedelic Shop in SF. I worked there from 1990 - 1992. On that day Rick and Jerry signed some of their artwork. Good times. I think of Rick and Jerry every time I go to the ocean. Rick... is the waves. Jerry ... is the deep sea and all it`s life. Thank you for your artwork , Rick .You will always touch us.

Comments I've been a fan of Rick's detailed designs since I first saw his style as a jr. high student. I attended San Clemente HS in the early 70's and Rick's work was all around me. Although I never met him, I felt a kinship with him and lived a few blocks away on Escalones St. at the same time he lived in SC. I found myself copying and emulating his style which was balanced, detailed and thought-provoking-all at the same time. As a computer graphic design teacher now for LAUSD, I am introducing a new generation of inner-city chicanos to his work and others I admire. You know what? They love it! His is a universal language and it still lives in all of us who knew or appreciated his quiet presence and inimitable style. Everyone is wearing the Von Dutch gear now, but we know who took the eyeball to the next level-it was Rick Griffin. Sail on Sailor will always be my favorite album cover and Murph still lives in me-"be at peace w/ our Creator Rick, and know I love you like the brother you are..."I'll see you in eternity.

Comments Thank you so much for sharing the art that Rick created. He was a huge part of a seminal period of a new renaissance and his images will forever be a part of the fabric of the 1960's. As Hendrix pushed the envelope and re-invented the sound of the era, Rick's genius did the same for the graphic arts. What a gift his presence was to us all!

Comments From his early work with Greg Noll and Surfer Magazine to his incredible poster work over the years Rick Griffin is one of the brave new world's best known Renaissance men, a true classic. I would imagine now he is enjoying his time with the Lord and sketching on the beach of some sea in heaven. God Bless you Rick Griffin.

Comments I Went to PV High with Rick. We graduated together in '62. We had a great time in Art Class. I saw him only once more at our 20 year reunion. We talked for hours about Art & Philosophy. At the end he said "Well met." Indeed, my friend. I hope your wife is doing well. JMD

Comments It is only through tremendous gifts and blazing vision that anyone can make such art over such a short period. No one will passs that way again. And beyond all the art, Rick's kelp wave Rasta hair flying remains the ultimate statement of surfing or me. His image itself is art. God bless him and his family. m

Comments Thank you for archiving these! He was a great genius and this is very inspiring material! I particularly love his use of esoteric symbolism... This is common to my art as well. No doubt, Rick Griffin's inspiring art and genius will stay with us forever.

Comments I met Rick in 1979 at Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa through Tim Barella an artist friend of mine who rode with me and a hand full of Christian bikers. Rick liked our Harleys and told me he wanted to get one some day. I told him to learn on a dirt bike first because of the need to know how to avoid danger on the street. After we spoke those few words my friend Tim asked me if I knew who I just met, I said no, and when he told me it was Rick Griffin I felt so stoked that I had met the guy who created the art that I admired so deeply both before & after my commitment to Jesus Christ. His posters of the Easter sunrise service are as clear in my mind as the first day I saw them over 20 yrs ago. Today in my Blacksmith shop in Laguna Canyon I have a copy of the Oracle magazine cover and His flying & surfing Eye balls overlooking all my work. His work reflects the omniscence and wonder of the Lord. God bless you for allowing us to recognize & honor our brother Rick.

Comments I knew Rick at Narbonne and Palos Verdes High School where we graduated in 1962. He and I were on the yearbook staff and I was always amazed at his talent. In August 2002 at our 40th high school reunion, I asked someone if he knew of Rick's whereabouts and was told about his tragic motorcycle accident. Tonight while watching Antiques Roadshow from San Francisco, his name was mentioned as a prominent artist of psychodelic posters and I was again amazed at the depth of his talent and pleased to know of his life after high school. He was always generous with his artistry and drew for anyone who asked. The yearbook is full of his gifts.

Comments In 1970 I was a confused Marine stationed at El Toro, California. At a friends house in Laguna Beach, I found a Steppenwolf album with Rick's skull and cross bones mandala on the cover. Looking deeply into the illustration, I had an epiphany. I "saw" how he had drawn it and was inspired to begin making my own pen and ink drawings. When I look over the galleries of his work, I see how many of his ideas I incorporated in my own work. The squiggly lines, the use of vintage product logos, the spiritual iconography, and even the bilateral symmetry - it's all there, making me understand that I am an inheritor and continuation of his line. I am grateful to you for preserving his memory and his beautiful art. Thank you for this opportunity to praise the work of Rick Griffin and acknowledge my debt to him. Will Johnson, Dallas, Texas
